Summer heat can make an ordinary activity surprisingly dangerous. Walking the dog, mowing the lawn, exercising outdoors, working in a warehouse, or attending a family picnic may feel routine—until the body can no longer release heat as quickly as it absorbs or produces it.

High temperatures are not the only factor. Humidity slows the evaporation of sweat, direct sunlight increases heat exposure, and poor ventilation traps warm air around the body. Physical activity, heavy clothing, certain medications, dehydration, and a lack of heat acclimatization can raise the risk even further.

Heat-related emergencies are largely preventable when people recognize the warning signs and adjust their plans early. These summer heat safety tips cover the most important hazards to watch for, from heat exhaustion and dangerously hot vehicles to playground burns and spoiled food.

Do Not Judge Heat Risk by Temperature Alone

The number shown on a weather app does not always describe how stressful the environment will be for your body. High humidity can make the air feel much hotter because sweat does not evaporate efficiently. Direct sunlight, limited shade, dark clothing, and reflected heat from concrete or asphalt can increase exposure further.

Indoor spaces can also become dangerous. Garages, attics, commercial kitchens, laundry rooms, greenhouses, warehouses, and apartments without adequate cooling may become hotter than the outdoor air.

Check the local heat forecast before planning strenuous activities. The CDC’s heat-health guidance also recommends checking local HeatRisk and air-quality information. Move exercise, yard work, and outdoor errands to the cooler morning or evening hours whenever possible.

Pay attention to how your body feels instead of waiting for an official heat advisory. Heat illness can occur below warning thresholds, particularly during intense physical activity or when someone is not accustomed to the weather.

Recognize Heat Cramps and Early Warning Signs

Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms that often develop during or after heavy sweating. They commonly affect the legs, arms, or abdomen. While they may seem minor, they can be a warning that the body is losing too much fluid and salt.

Stop the activity, move to a cooler place, and rest. Drink water or an appropriate electrolyte-containing beverage. Avoid immediately returning to strenuous activity, even if the cramp disappears.

Other early signs of heat stress can include:

  • Unusual fatigue
  • Thirst
  • Headache
  • Irritability
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Reduced coordination

Know the Difference Between Heat Exhaustion and Heatstroke

Heat exhaustion occurs when the body struggles to control its temperature, often after prolonged sweating and fluid loss. A person may have heavy sweating, cool or clammy skin, weakness, headache, nausea, dizziness, muscle cramps, or a fast pulse.

Move the person to an air-conditioned or shaded location. Remove unnecessary outer clothing, apply cool wet cloths, and encourage small sips of cool water if the person is fully awake and able to swallow. Seek medical care if symptoms worsen, do not improve with cooling, or include repeated vomiting.

Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency. According to the CDC’s heat-illness guidance, warning signs include confusion, altered mental status, slurred speech, loss of consciousness, seizures, and a very high body temperature. The skin may be hot and dry, but a person—particularly someone experiencing exertional heatstroke—may still be sweating heavily.

Call 911 immediately if heatstroke is suspected. Move the person to a cooler area and begin rapid cooling while emergency help is on the way. Remove excess clothing and cool the body with cold water, ice-soaked towels, or ice packs around the neck, armpits, and groin. Cold-water immersion can be especially effective when it is available and can be performed safely.

Do not give fluids to a person who is confused, unconscious, having a seizure, or unable to swallow safely. Do not delay cooling while waiting for an ambulance.

Drink Regularly, Not Only When You Feel Thirsty

Thirst can be an unreliable warning during strenuous work, especially for older adults. Begin hot-weather activities well hydrated and drink regularly throughout the day.

Water is generally appropriate for shorter activities. People who are sweating heavily for several hours may also need beverages or foods that replace electrolytes. OSHA’s heat-prevention guidance recommends cool drinking water and notes that workers performing jobs lasting two hours or more should also have access to electrolyte-containing fluids.

Avoid relying on large amounts of alcohol, highly caffeinated energy drinks, or very sugary beverages for hydration. Alcohol is particularly risky because it can impair judgment and contribute to fluid loss.

More water is not always better. Drinking excessive quantities in a short time can also be dangerous. People with heart disease, kidney disease, or medical fluid restrictions should ask a healthcare professional how to manage hydration during hot weather.

Build Heat Tolerance Gradually

A fit person can still develop heat illness if they are not acclimatized. The body needs time to adapt to working or exercising in a hot environment.

New workers, athletes beginning summer training, travelers arriving from a cooler climate, and people returning after an absence should start with shorter, less intense periods of activity. Increase exposure gradually over approximately one to two weeks.

Take more frequent breaks than usual during the adjustment period. Rest in shade or air conditioning, and shorten the activity when humidity rises or protective clothing must be worn.

Outdoor workers are not the only people affected. Bakers, cooks, factory workers, delivery drivers, maintenance staff, and people working near machinery may face significant indoor heat exposure. “Water, rest, and shade” is a useful starting point, but workplaces should also provide ventilation, training, adjusted schedules, and an emergency response plan.

Use Fans Carefully in Very Hot Rooms

A fan moves air across the skin but does not reduce the actual room temperature. In moderate heat, this airflow can improve comfort by helping sweat evaporate. In an extremely hot enclosed room, however, a fan may simply blow hot air over the body.

The CDC advises using fans only when indoor temperatures are below 90°F. At higher temperatures, use air conditioning or relocate to a cooled public space, such as a library, shopping center, or community cooling center.

Close curtains and blinds during the sunniest hours, limit oven use, and open windows when the outdoor air becomes cooler than the indoor air. Cool showers and damp cloths can provide temporary relief, but they should not create a false sense of safety in a dangerously hot home.

During a power outage, check on neighbors who may be isolated or medically vulnerable. If using a portable generator, operate it outdoors and well away from doors, windows, and vents to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Never Leave a Child or Pet in a Vehicle

A parked vehicle can become deadly even when the outdoor temperature does not seem extreme. Opening the windows slightly or parking in the shade does not keep the interior safe.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration advises never leaving a child unattended in a vehicle for any length of time. Develop a routine of checking the entire vehicle—especially the back seat—before locking it. Place a necessary item, such as a work badge or bag, in the back as an additional reminder without creating a hazard.

Keep parked vehicles locked and store keys out of children’s reach. A child may climb into an unlocked car or trunk and be unable to escape. If a child is missing, check nearby vehicles, trunks, pools, and other dangerous locations immediately.

Pets should never be left in parked cars either. A running air conditioner is not a reliable safeguard because the engine can stop or the cooling system can fail.

If you see a child alone in a hot vehicle, call 911 immediately and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Do not wait for the caregiver to return.

Check Playground Equipment and Other Hot Surfaces

Metal slides are not the only surfaces that can cause thermal burns. Plastic equipment, artificial turf, rubber playground surfacing, concrete, asphalt, pool decks, and dark-colored outdoor furniture can all become extremely hot in direct sunlight.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that playground equipment and surfacing may become hot enough to burn skin even when the weather itself is relatively mild.

Before allowing a child to play, touch the slide, seat, handrail, and surrounding surface with your hand. If you cannot comfortably keep your hand there, choose a shaded structure or return at a cooler time.

Shoes are important around hot pavement and pool areas. Dogs also need paw protection; if the ground is too hot for your hand, it may be too hot for a prolonged walk. Choose grassy routes, walk early or late in the day, and never force an animal to continue if it is showing distress.

Protect Against Sunburn and Heat Together

Sunburn damages the skin and may also make it more difficult for the body to cool itself. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen, protective clothing, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. Reapply sunscreen according to the product instructions, especially after swimming or heavy sweating.

Shade reduces direct solar exposure but does not eliminate heat risk. A shaded tent, parked vehicle, or enclosed canopy can still trap warm air. Make sure shaded resting areas have adequate airflow.

People working outdoors may need breathable, lightweight clothing, but certain jobs require heavy protective equipment. In those cases, rest breaks and cooling time should be increased rather than removing essential safety gear.

Keep Summer Food Out of the Danger Zone

Warm weather allows foodborne bacteria to multiply quickly. Meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, dairy products, cut fruit, cooked vegetables, and prepared salads should not sit on a picnic table or in a hot car for hours.

The USDA’s food-safety guidance states that perishable food should be discarded after two hours at room temperature—or after only one hour when the temperature is above 90°F.

Use insulated coolers with plenty of ice or frozen packs. Keep the cooler in shade and limit how often it is opened. Consider placing drinks in a separate cooler so the food container stays cold.

Do not judge safety by smell or appearance. Harmful bacteria may be present even when food looks normal. When you cannot confirm how long a perishable item has been warm, throwing it away is safer than taking a chance.

Review Medications and Medical Conditions

Some medications can increase heat sensitivity by affecting sweating, hydration, blood pressure, alertness, or the body’s ability to regulate temperature. Examples may include certain diuretics, antihistamines, blood-pressure medications, stimulants, and psychiatric medications.

Do not stop or change a prescription on your own. The CDC’s guidance on heat and medications recommends developing a hot-weather medication plan with a clinician or pharmacist.

Medication storage matters too. Do not leave pills, insulin, inhalers, auto-injectors, or other temperature-sensitive products in a hot vehicle. Follow the storage range on the label and ask a pharmacist what to do if a product has been exposed to excessive heat.

Older adults, infants, pregnant people, outdoor workers, people with limited mobility, and individuals with heart, lung, kidney, or mental health conditions may need additional support. Arrange regular check-ins during heat waves rather than waiting for someone to request help.

Pay Attention to Pets

Dogs and cats can also develop heat-related illness. Warning signs may include excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, poor coordination, collapse, or gums that appear unusually red or pale.

Move an overheated pet to a cooler area, offer small amounts of water if the animal is alert, and contact a veterinarian promptly. Use cool—not ice-cold—water to begin lowering body temperature unless a veterinary professional gives different instructions.

Provide constant access to shade and fresh water. Avoid intense activity during peak heat and remember that short-nosed breeds, older animals, overweight pets, and animals with heart or breathing problems may be more vulnerable.

Create a Simple Hot-Weather Safety Plan

Before a very hot day, decide:

  • Where you can go if your home becomes unsafe
  • Who will check on older or isolated relatives
  • How outdoor work and exercise will be rescheduled
  • Where drinking water and cooling supplies are stored
  • How medications will remain within their safe temperature range
  • Who will supervise children around vehicles and water
  • How pets will be kept cool
  • Which symptoms require immediate emergency help

Summer heat becomes most dangerous when people underestimate it or wait too long to act.
