The goal is not to become afraid of common products. Most are safe when used as directed. The important thing is to understand what creates pressure or heat inside them, recognize warning signs, and avoid storage or charging habits that increase the risk.

Why Can an Everyday Product Explode?

Household products can rupture or explode for several different reasons.

A sealed container may build pressure as its contents become warmer and expand. A fuel leak can mix with air and ignite when it reaches a spark or flame. A pressure cooker may release steam and boiling food if its safety mechanisms are blocked or its lid opens unexpectedly. A lithium-ion battery can enter a rapid self-heating process known as thermal runaway.

Four basic conditions are responsible for many incidents:

Lithium-Ion Batteries in Everyday Devices

Lithium-ion batteries power phones, laptops, cordless vacuums, power tools, toys, cameras, power banks, electric bikes, heated clothing, and many other products. They store a large amount of energy in a small space, which makes them useful but also means that a damaged or defective battery can release heat very quickly.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, thermal runaway is an uncontrolled heating chain reaction that may result in fire or explosion. Warning signs include bulging, cracking, popping, hissing, visible gas, and rising temperature.

Other signs of battery trouble can include:

  • Smoke or vapor
  • Discoloration
  • A device becoming too hot to touch
  • A charger repeatedly shutting down

Charge Devices on a Hard, Open Surface

Charge phones, power banks, tools, and personal mobility devices on a firm, nonflammable surface with air circulation. Do not charge them:

  • Under a pillow or blanket

Loose Batteries and Improvised Battery Packs

Even ordinary loose batteries can cause burns or fires if their terminals contact metal. Coins, keys, tools, jewelry, and other batteries can complete an electrical circuit and create rapid heating.

Keep loose batteries in their original packaging or a battery-storage case. Do not carry unprotected rechargeable cells in a pocket, purse, or toolbox.

Never combine batteries of different types, brands, ages, or charge levels unless the product specifically permits it. Do not mix disposable batteries with rechargeable ones. Avoid using loose lithium cells that have damaged wrappers, dents, corrosion, or unclear labeling.

Homemade battery packs and modified chargers are particularly risky when they lack proper temperature monitoring, short-circuit protection, or cell balancing. Repairing a battery pack should be left to a qualified technician.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has received reports involving battery overheating, fires, charger-related electrical hazards, thermal burns, and high-velocity ejection of internal battery components.

Aerosol Cans

Hairspray, air freshener, insect repellent, spray paint, cooking spray, deodorant, and cleaning products are often packaged in pressurized aerosol cans. Even when the contents are not highly flammable, the container itself can rupture if internal pressure rises.

Store aerosol cans away from stoves, grills, furnaces, fireplaces, radiators, and direct sunlight. Never leave them in a hot car, where temperatures can rise quickly.

Do not place aerosol cans in:

  • Ovens or microwaves
  • Campfires or fireplaces
  • Trash fires
  • Hot-water baths
  • Freezers
  • Areas where they may be punctured or crushed

Do not attempt to empty a can by drilling a hole in it. Aerosol products should also never be sprayed toward flames, cigarettes, electrical sparks, or hot heating elements.

A rusty, leaking, bulging, or badly dented can should not be used. Contact your local household hazardous-waste program for disposal instructions rather than placing a questionable pressurized container into an ordinary trash compactor.

Butane Canisters and Portable Stoves

Portable butane stoves are popular for camping, outdoor cooking, hot pot meals, and emergency preparedness. Their fuel canisters contain liquefied gas under pressure.

Using an oversized pan can be dangerous if it extends over the fuel compartment and reflects heat toward the canister. Pressure may rise as the container becomes hotter. Always follow the stove manufacturer’s limits for cookware size and position.

Use portable butane stoves only in the location and ventilation conditions stated in the manual. Keep spare canisters away from the operating stove and never store them next to a grill, heater, or direct sunlight.

Before use, check that:

  • The canister is the correct type.

  • The canister is not dented, rusty, or leaking.
  • The locking mechanism engages properly.
  • The stove sits on a level, stable surface.

Propane Cylinders and Gas Grills

Propane tanks are designed to hold fuel safely under pressure, but damage, improper filling, corrosion, heat exposure, or leaking connections can create serious hazards.

Always transport a propane cylinder upright and secured so it cannot roll around. Do not leave it in an enclosed vehicle longer than necessary. Store cylinders outdoors in a well-ventilated location, away from flames, high heat, building openings, and children.

Never store a standard grill cylinder inside a house, basement, or attached garage. Do not use a cylinder that is heavily rusted, dented, bulging, or damaged around its valve.

Before lighting a grill, inspect the hose and connections. If the manufacturer recommends a leak test, use the approved soap-and-water method and follow the instructions. Never search for a leak with a match or lighter.

If you smell the distinctive odor added to propane, do not operate switches, create sparks, or attempt to light the appliance. Leave the area and contact emergency services or the fuel supplier from a safe location.

Gasoline and Other Portable Fuel Containers

Pressure cookers prepare food by trapping steam. When functioning correctly, safety systems control and release pressure. Problems can develop if the vent becomes blocked, the sealing ring is damaged, the pot is overfilled, or the lid is forced open too soon.

Read the manual because fill limits vary by food type. Foamy or expanding foods, such as beans, grains, pasta, and split peas, may require a lower maximum fill level.

Before each use:

Home Carbonation Machines and Pressurized Bottles

Countertop carbonation machines use compressed carbon dioxide to create sparkling water. Their bottles are designed to withstand repeated pressurization, but they do not last indefinitely.

Use only compatible bottles approved for the machine. Check the expiration or replacement date, and retire bottles that are scratched, cloudy, warped, cracked, or damaged.

Do not carbonate warm liquid unless the manufacturer specifically allows it. Do not add ingredients before carbonation if the machine is intended only for plain water. Sugar, pulp, or other substances may foam rapidly or interfere with pressure release.

Never place a carbonation bottle in a dishwasher, freezer, or hot vehicle unless its instructions specifically say that this is safe. Temperature extremes can weaken or deform the material.

Alcohol-Burning Tabletop Fire Pits

Small decorative fire pits can look less intimidating than a fireplace, but liquid fuel creates a dangerous and sometimes unexpected hazard called flame jetting.

A small flame may be difficult to see. If someone pours liquid alcohol fuel into a device that is still burning or hot, the flame can travel into the fuel stream and container. Burning liquid may then be propelled toward people nearby.

Never refill a fire pit while it is lit, hot, or smoking. Extinguish it completely and allow it to cool according to the manufacturer’s directions.

What to Do When a Product Looks Unstable

Treat bulging, hissing, leaking, smoking, extreme heat, or strong chemical odors as warning signs.

Do not pick up an actively smoking battery, puncture a swollen container, tighten a leaking gas valve with improvised tools, or carry a burning object through the house. Move people away, use an outdoor exit if available, and call emergency services.

Never pour water onto burning fuel, energized electrical equipment, or an unknown chemical. A fire extinguisher should be used only when the fire is small, you have the correct type, you know how to use it, and you have a clear escape route. Otherwise, leave immediately and call 911.

After any significant burn, blast injury, breathing problem, eye exposure, or suspected hearing damage, seek medical attention.

Make a habit of checking that:

  • Batteries and chargers are undamaged and compatible.
  • Devices charge on hard, uncovered surfaces.
  • Aerosol cans and fuel containers stay away from heat.
