Discovering bat droppings in the attic can be unsettling. A few dark pellets beneath a roof opening may indicate an occasional visitor, while a thick layer of guano, stained insulation, and a persistent ammonia-like odor can point to a long-established colony.

The most important thing is not to start sweeping immediately. Dry bat droppings and contaminated dust can become airborne when disturbed. In areas where the fungus Histoplasma is present, inhaling contaminated airborne particles may cause a lung infection called histoplasmosis. A separate concern arises if anyone has had physical contact with a bat, since that could require an urgent rabies assessment.

Small, isolated deposits may sometimes be handled carefully by a healthy homeowner. Large accumulations, occupied roosts, contaminated insulation, or hard-to-reach attic spaces should generally be left to wildlife-control and hazardous-cleanup professionals.

How to Recognize Bat Droppings

Bat droppings, also called guano, are usually dark brown or black and shaped like small elongated pellets. They often collect directly below a roosting location or an opening bats use to enter the attic.

At first glance, guano can resemble mouse droppings. Bat pellets, however, often crumble more easily and may contain shiny insect fragments. Do not crush unknown droppings with your fingers to identify them. That can release dust and bring contaminated material into contact with your skin.

Other signs of attic bat activity include:

  • Squeaking or scratching around sunset or before sunrise
  • Bats emerging from the roofline at dusk
  • Brown or greasy staining near an exterior opening
  • A strong, stale, or ammonia-like odor
  • Urine stains on rafters, ceilings, or insulation
  • Droppings concentrated beneath rafters or wall cavities
  • Insects such as bat bugs near the roost
  • A bat appearing inside the living area

A few old pellets do not necessarily mean bats are still present. Observe the outside of the home at dusk from a safe distance or ask a wildlife professional to inspect the structure.

Why Bat Guano Can Be a Health Risk

Bat droppings are not automatically infectious, and simply seeing guano does not mean someone will become ill. The primary concern is disturbing material that may be contaminated with Histoplasma, a fungus found in soil and areas enriched by bird or bat droppings.

When contaminated material is swept, shoveled, vacuumed, or disturbed during renovation, microscopic fungal spores can enter the air. People may then inhale them into their lungs. The risk generally increases with the amount of contaminated material, the amount of dust produced, and the duration of exposure.

According to the CDC’s histoplasmosis information, most people who inhale Histoplasma do not develop symptoms. When illness occurs, symptoms may include:

  • Fever and chills
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Chest pain
  • Body aches

Symptoms usually begin between 3 and 17 days after exposure. Because they can resemble influenza, COVID-19, or other forms of pneumonia, people may not immediately connect the illness with attic cleanup.

Severe histoplasmosis is uncommon, but the risk is higher for infants, adults over 55, people with HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients, and those taking immune-suppressing medications such as corticosteroids or TNF inhibitors. People with chronic lung disease may also have a greater risk of serious pulmonary complications.

Histoplasmosis does not normally spread from one person to another. The concern is inhaling fungal spores from the environment, particularly while contaminated dust is being disturbed.

What About Rabies?

Finding droppings alone is not considered the same as being exposed to rabies. Rabies is primarily transmitted when infected saliva or nervous-system tissue enters a bite, scratch, open wound, eyes, nose, or mouth—not through ordinary contact with guano.

However, discovering a live or dead bat requires a different response. Bat bites can be extremely small and may go unnoticed. The CDC’s bat rabies guidance recommends contacting a healthcare professional or public health department if a bat may have bitten, scratched, or directly touched someone.

An assessment may also be necessary when a bat is found in a room with:

  • A sleeping person
  • An unattended young child
  • Someone who cannot reliably report contact
  • A person whose awareness was impaired by medication, alcohol, or another condition

Do not release a bat involved in a possible exposure until you have spoken with local public health officials. The animal may need to be captured safely and tested. Never pick up a bat with bare hands.

Should You Clean the Attic Yourself?

There is no single household measurement that makes every bat guano cleanup safe. The decision depends on the amount of material, attic design, ventilation, contamination level, occupant health, and whether bats are still present.

A homeowner might consider handling only a very small, isolated deposit when:

  • The droppings appear limited and recent.
  • There is no thick, dusty accumulation.
  • The material is on an easily cleaned surface.
  • No insulation, ductwork, or stored belongings are heavily contaminated.
  • Bats have already been safely excluded.
  • The person cleaning is healthy and can use appropriate protective equipment.

Professional cleanup is the safer choice when:

  • Guano covers a large area or has accumulated in layers.
  • Droppings are dry, dusty, or mixed deeply into insulation.
  • A strong ammonia odor is present.
  • Urine or guano has soaked wood, drywall, or ceilings.
  • The attic is cramped, poorly ventilated, or difficult to exit.
  • Cleanup would involve demolition or insulation removal.
  • Air ducts or HVAC equipment may be contaminated.
  • Bats are still roosting in the structure.
  • Anyone in the household is immunocompromised or has serious lung disease.
  • The site has been associated with a suspected histoplasmosis illness.

The CDC specifically recommends using professional companies that specialize in hazardous-waste removal for large accumulations of bat or bird droppings. Large-scale removal may require containment, specialized respiratory protection, industrial filtration, and regulated waste-disposal procedures.

What Not to Do

Several intuitive cleaning methods can make exposure worse. Do not:

  • Sweep dry guano with a broom.
  • Use a leaf blower or compressed air.
  • Vacuum it with a household vacuum or ordinary shop vacuum.
  • Shake contaminated boxes, fabrics, or insulation.
  • Start tearing out drywall before assessing the contamination.
  • Rely on a loose surgical or dust mask.
  • Allow children or pets into the attic.
  • Assume bleach makes dusty guano safe to disturb.
  • Seal every exterior opening while bats are still inside.
  • Handle a live, injured, or dead bat with bare hands.

A consumer vacuum can exhaust fine particles back into the room or contaminate the machine. For major cleanup, professionals may use industrial high-efficiency filtration equipment designed for hazardous material rather than an ordinary household HEPA vacuum.

How to Clean a Very Small Amount of Bat Droppings

If the deposit is genuinely small, accessible, and suitable for homeowner cleanup, plan the work before entering the attic. If the situation appears more extensive once you begin, stop and contact a professional.

1. Confirm That the Bats Are Gone

Cleaning while bats are still roosting will not solve the problem. It can also increase the chance of direct contact or trap animals inside the structure.

A wildlife professional can identify active openings and install one-way exclusion devices that allow bats to leave without returning. Exclusion should be completed in accordance with state and local wildlife laws.

2. Restrict Access and Protect the House

Keep family members and pets out of the work area. Close the attic access door when possible, and protect the route between the attic and the outdoors with disposable sheeting.

Avoid placing a fan where it could push attic dust into the living space. If the attic can be ventilated directly outdoors without spreading contamination to windows, neighbors, or air intakes, controlled ventilation may be helpful.

Turn off nearby HVAC equipment if there is a realistic chance that dust could enter its return system. Do not disturb ductwork unless it has been evaluated.

3. Wear Appropriate Protective Equipment

At a minimum, small cleanup requires a properly fitted, NIOSH-approved particulate respirator, protective goggles, disposable gloves, long sleeves, and washable or disposable clothing. Disposable shoe or boot covers can help prevent contaminated material from being tracked through the house.

A surgical mask or loose-fitting face covering is not a respirator. Facial hair can also prevent a tight-fitting respirator from sealing properly.

Protection for a large guano cleanup may need to go well beyond an N95. CDC/NIOSH respiratory guidance identifies work involving large accumulations of bat or bird droppings as high-risk and discusses powered air-purifying respirators or full-face respirators with high-efficiency filters. That is another reason extensive cleanup belongs in professional hands.

4. Suppress Dust Carefully

Do not handle the material while it is dry. Use a gentle, low-pressure spray to lightly dampen the droppings and nearby dust. The goal is to prevent particles from becoming airborne, not to soak the ceiling below or create contaminated runoff.

CDC/NIOSH guidance advises against sweeping or shoveling dry, dusty material and recommends carefully wetting it before collection. A forceful spray should also be avoided because it can scatter contamination.

Disinfectants should not be treated as a substitute for dust control. The CDC notes that there are no EPA-registered products specifically approved as soil disinfectants or proven effective against Histoplasma in contaminated environmental material.

5. Collect and Contain the Waste

Once dampened, pick up the material with disposable towels, a scoop, or another tool that will not produce dust. Place it directly into a sturdy plastic bag. Seal the bag, place it inside a second bag if needed, and follow local requirements for disposal.

Do not carry open containers of guano through the home. Avoid overfilling bags, since punctures or spills can spread material along the removal path.

6. Address Contaminated Materials

Hard, nonporous surfaces can generally be cleaned after the droppings have been removed. Porous materials require more caution.

Insulation containing substantial guano or urine usually cannot be cleaned effectively and may need replacement. Heavily stained drywall, cardboard, unfinished wood, or ceiling material may also need to be removed. Disturbing these materials can generate a large amount of contaminated dust, so this stage often requires professional containment.

Stored possessions should be evaluated individually. Sealed plastic or metal containers may be cleanable, while contaminated cardboard boxes, loose papers, and soft materials may be difficult to salvage safely.

7. Remove Protective Equipment Carefully

Avoid shaking contaminated clothing. Remove disposable covers and gloves so that the dirty surfaces fold inward, then place them in a sealed bag.

Wash reusable boots and tools without creating splashes or aerosolized particles. Wash your hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water, and launder reusable clothing separately.

Preventing Bats From Returning

Cleanup is only half of the solution. Bats can enter through gaps as small as approximately one-quarter inch, including openings beneath roof edges, around vents, behind fascia boards, and where utility lines enter the building.

Effective bat exclusion generally involves:

  1. Identifying every active and potential opening.
  2. Installing one-way exits at active roost entrances.
  3. Waiting until the bats have left.
  4. Sealing the openings permanently.
  5. Repairing damaged screens, vents, flashing, and trim.
  6. Rechecking the attic for renewed activity.

Do not simply seal the main hole while bats are inside. They may become trapped, die in inaccessible spaces, or move into the living area while searching for another exit.

Timing also matters. Flightless young may remain in the roost during the maternity season, which is often in late spring and summer. The CDC advises caution with bat-proofing between May and August, although exact timing varies by location and species. A licensed wildlife-control professional can choose an appropriate exclusion period and comply with protections for native or endangered bats.

Avoid poisons, glue traps, and indiscriminate killing. Bats play an important ecological role by consuming insects, and in many places their removal is regulated.

When to Seek Medical Advice After Cleanup

Being near bat droppings does not automatically mean treatment or testing is necessary. However, contact a healthcare professional if fever, cough, unusual fatigue, chest pain, chills, or shortness of breath develops within the weeks after disturbing guano or contaminated attic material.

Explain the exposure clearly. Mention that you entered an attic containing bat droppings, whether you swept or vacuumed, how much material was present, and what respiratory protection you used. This information may help the clinician consider histoplasmosis alongside more common respiratory illnesses.
