How Do Parasites Get Into Mountain Streams?

For cryptosporidiosis, many otherwise healthy people recover with supportive care, although nitazoxanide is FDA-approved for eligible immunocompetent patients aged one year and older. Replacing lost fluids and electrolytes is one of the most important parts of care. Before using an anti-diarrheal medicine, particularly during severe or unexplained diarrhea, consult a healthcare professional.

1. Boil the Water
Boiling is the most reliable backcountry treatment for killing disease-causing germs.
Bring clear water to a rolling boil for at least one minute. At elevations above 6,500 feet, or approximately 1,981 meters, boil it for three minutes. Allow the water to cool naturally and store it in a clean, covered container.
If the water is cloudy, let particles settle and pour it through a clean cloth or prefilter before boiling.
2. Choose the Right Filter
Not every camping filter removes parasites. Look for one that has:
- An absolute pore size of one micron or smaller, or
- Certification to NSF Standard 53 or 58 for cyst reduction or removal
A filter rated at an absolute pore size of 0.3 micron or smaller can remove parasites and bacteria, but ordinary portable filters generally do not reliably remove viruses.
Remember that “nominal” and “absolute” pore sizes are not interchangeable. An absolute rating provides a more dependable maximum pore size.
3. Filter and Then Disinfect
When boiling is not possible, filtering first and then disinfecting provides broader protection.
Household chlorine bleach and iodine can kill many bacteria and viruses, but they do not work well against parasites. Chlorine dioxide can kill Giardia and has some effectiveness against Cryptosporidium, but correct concentration and contact time are essential.
