Too much laundry detergent can leave clothes feeling stiff, create unpleasant odors, interfere with draining, and make a washing machine run longer than necessary. Why More Detergent Does Not Mean Cleaner Clothes

Laundry detergent contains surfactants that help water loosen oils, soil, and other material from fabric. The loosened dirt must then remain suspended in the wash water long enough to be carried away during draining and rinsing.

Adding more detergent than the load requires does not automatically improve this process. Instead, the washer may struggle to rinse out the excess product.
